Up until a few days ago I didn't fully understand the mania surrounding Star Wars.
No, I haven't been living under a rock.
Yes, I do know the general plotline.
Darth Vader's booming voice with the distinctive sound of his breathing, Yoda's wisdom, Princess Leia's hair buns, and much more from the movie are deeply ingrained in pop culture four decades after its initial release. The film has taken on a life of its own. The other day I came across a sleek black patent leather Darth Vader wallet in a store. It called my name. I decided against buying it but I still feel drawn to it. Could it be the force? Maybe.
Part of the reason for my lack of detailed knowledge of the series is because the first movie, Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope, hit theaters before I was born. Over the years I've only seen bits and pieces of the original trilogy. Plus I'm not a huge movie fan. This week I binged on the first three films so I could be ready to watch The Force Awakens today. I love a good binge session and I'm now up to speed.
YES.
Here are a few of my random thoughts about the movies:
*I want a land speeder, a light saber, and my own personal droid
*The rear view of Darth Vader briefly with his mask off in Episode V The Empire Strikes Back was totally unexpected.
*The Han Solo Princess Leia pairing reminded me of the romance Scarlett O’Hara and Rhett Butler in Gone with the Wind.
*I heart R2D2. He beeps, squeals, AND helps save the day.
Two deaths also caught me off guard. Yoda and Darth Vader. I truly didn’t see it coming. Amazingly I was unaware of this fact. How did I not know this? No one ever mentioned their deaths at the end.
*insert fans shaking their heads*
I know, I know. It's never too late right?
As for the prequels released starting in 1999 I’ll catch up on all of those later.
In anticipation of the release of the latest installation Star Wars fandom is everywhere. Including the lobby of the Sheraton Hotel in downtown Seattle. For more than 20 years the hotel has served as the go to destination for impressive gingerbread houses. I went there as part of a work assignment and to satisfy my curiosity. Touring the display is free but fans, aspiring Jedi’s, and spectators are asked to make a contribution to JDRF (juvenile diabetes research foundation) It’s a must see event.
I was blown away. The six houses were much more intricate and larger than I expected. Each immaculately detailed piece focused on a different episode. Here they are.
“Do or do not. There is no try.” Yoda
