Super Bowl Repeat? #GoHawks

This morning the Seattle Seahawks boarded a flight bound for Arizona. One week from today they’ll face off against the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLIX. As expected thousands of 12s decked out in navy blue and lime green lined the streets to see them off. If you’re interested in checking out the pictures they are here, here, and here.

I’m still kind of in shock.
Before the NFC championship game against the Green Bay Packers I was pretty confident that we’d win. It wasn’t going to be easy but we could do it. After the Packers interception in the first quarter and subsequent plays I wasn’t so sure.

Fast forward to the fourth quarter and the unexpected happened.

Oh my God, Oh my God!!!!!!!

That’s essentially all that I could say with just a few minutes left in the game. After the onside kick the ball bounced off the helmet of a Packers player, we got possession, then a touchdown THEN a two point conversion. What am I watching?!?!?! Moments before that game changing play I told Jeff we needed a miracle to win this game. If you ask Russell Wilson his prayers were answered from up above.

Then overtime and ANOTHER touchdown.

We won.

Great game. I was on the edge of my seat. For me, the unexpected is what makes sports entertaining.
KOMO created a special set for Seahawks coverage.

Aside from “deflategate” what I find interesting leading up to the game is how outspoken the Mayor of Glendale is about playing host to the Super Bowl. Unlike Hawks and Pats fans Jerry Weiers is not looking forward to paying an estimated $3 million in mostly public safety costs that comes with the game. It’s worth checking out his interview with CBS News.

ESPN’s Mina Kines hilariously sums it up in Glendale not cheering Super Bowl, “The sight of a city official standing up to a league bigwig is so unusual, it's a little startling, like witnessing a dog walking on its hind legs.” While it's too late for Glendale to turn back now I'm sure there will be an update (at least locally) later on the final bill.

One thing I've noticed about living here is the way fans and local media treat the Hawks. All good, all positive - a very "WE'RE THE BEST TEAM EVVVVVVVEEEERRRRRR!!!" attitude. That may sound like an exaggeration but it's true. You can even watch the game at the public library downtown. Yes, the library. It's Hawks love all day long and it's everywhere you go especially on Blue Friday.

You want to wear the jersey of an opposing team (especially the 49ers)? Prepare for less than friendly stares or even boos. Yes, I've seen this happen.
This is just a fraction of Hawks love around downtown Seattle.
Many people here have on rose colored glasses when it comes to our shortcomings. They talk about the Hawks as if they're invincible. That attitude is in sharp contrast to national media. While the Hawks get glowing reviews those outside the Hawks Nest are still objective. Commentators in particular point out the problems with our offense. It's interesting to see the difference especially now that we're in the countdown to the Super Bowl. Many are picking the Patriots to win and I can understand why.

So here we go again. There's a lot on the line. The Hawks have an opportunity to distinguish themselves as a dynasty. I know using dynasty MIGHT be going too far, but hey I'm in the middle of Hawks mania. Next Sunday I’ll join the chorus of tens of thousands of other 12s chanting SEA! HAWKS! Let's become back to back Super Bowl champs. It's not going to be an easy win. I'm crossing my fingers we do well.

“This team shows how powerful belief is and what it allows you to accomplish!!! #TOGETHER #GoHawks #12s.” –Seahawks head coach Pete Carrol via Twitter after the NFC Championship win.

  1. This would have been more interesting if we actually weren't the BEST TEAM EVER. 'Nuff said.
